Black History Month

Every February, the United StatesÌýobservesÌýBlack History Month. In this 100th year of the annual celebration, º£½ÇÔÚÏß (º£½ÇÔÚÏß) is using the month to spotlight an employee,Ìýstudent, or alumniÌýeach week. Together, we celebrate their stories, contributions, and impact on our community.Ìý

Kayleah CavalloÌýisÌýan alumnaÌýwho graduated from º£½ÇÔÚÏß inÌý2014. Read about herÌýbackground below.Ìý

Where are you from?ÌýÌý

I’mÌýfrom Miami, Florida.Ìý

When did you joinÌýº£½ÇÔÚÏß? What brought you to the University?ÌýÌý

º£½ÇÔÚÏß was my dream school because it is a Christian university and it hasÌýsome of the most robust programs of study. I joined º£½ÇÔÚÏß in the fall of 2009.Ìý

Why is Black History Month meaningful to you?ÌýÌý

BlackÌýHistoryÌýMonth is meaningful to me because it gives ode to the history, innovative accomplishments,Ìýand traditions of our rich culture. It highlights that we have found a way to influence so many areas and continue to be excellent in our contribution.ÌýWe’reÌýalways known for creating our own lane.Ìý

How does your cultural background influence your area of specialization?Ìý

ÌýI come from a family of entrepreneurs who specialize in business and the arts. My dad was a businessman and entrepreneur. My mom was also in corporate business and continues to be an example to me of diversity in the workplace. I’ve always been encouraged by my parents and community to never stay in a box. Pursuing entrepreneurship runs through my veins because of their example and other historical figures. When I think of entrepreneurs like Madam C. J. Walker, who created beauty products for Black women and holds the Guinness record for the first female self-made millionaire in America and Janice Bryant Howroyd, the firstÌýBlackÌýwoman to build and own a billion-dollar company, I am inspired by their example ofÌýÌýtrailblazing.ÌýThey took risks but were faithful to theirÌýmissionÌýand created generational wealth.ÌýThese and many other examples remind us thatÌýBlack people are driven, compassionate, andÌýtenacious,Ìýstrong, smart, and unique.ÌýÌý

What is one of your most meaningful memoriesÌýatÌýº£½ÇÔÚÏß?ÌýÌý

Being a part of º£½ÇÔÚÏß praise and having some of the greatest women professors in the business school.Ìý

Anything elseÌýyou’dÌýlike to share?ÌýÌý

Your journey may lookÌýdifferent,Ìýbut the Lord always orders your steps. Walk in purpose and embrace uniqueness.Ìý
