Every February, the United States听observes听Black History Month. In this 100th听year of the annual celebration, 海角在线 (海角在线) is using the month to spotlight an employee or student each week. Together, we celebrate their stories, contributions, and impact on our community.听听
Darionta Bell is a senior admissions counselor at 海角在线. Below is a little bit about Bell and what his culture means to him. 听
When did you join听海角在线? What brought you to the University?听
I joined 海角在线 in September 2025. After graduating from college that same year, I had the opportunity to visit West Palm Beach in March. Following graduation and a season of prayer, I felt led to听relocate听toward the end of the summer. While spending time downtown, I became familiar with 海角在线, applied for a position, and the rest is history. I truly view this opportunity as an answered prayer.听
What is your background?听
I am originally from Anniston, Alabama. After graduating from Anniston High School, I continued my education at Campbellsville University, where I was a collegiate track athlete. During my time there, I earned both my bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degrees.听
Why is Black History Month meaningful to you?听
Black History Month is meaningful to me because it听provides听an opportunity to reflect on an extraordinary history. It is extraordinary not because it has been easy, but because of the resilience, perseverance, and strength听demonstrated听throughout generations. Black History Month also invites our broader society to learn, reflect, and grow together.听听
How does your cultural background influence your career or profession?听
My cultural background has had a听significant influence听on my career and professional outlook. Historically, Black communities have not always had equal access to education. Reflecting on a time when we could not freely attend certain universities, visit libraries, or access the same educational resources reminds me not to take these opportunities for granted. That history motivates me to be a lifelong learner and educator. I am constantly mindful of the sacrifices made by those before me so that I can have the opportunities I enjoy today.听听
What is one of your most meaningful memories听at听海角在线?听
One of my most meaningful experiences at 海角在线 has been the relationships I have formed. In听a short time, I have met many individuals who exemplify strong faith and character. While some of these relationships may be brief, their impact on my life and the work I aspire to do has听been lasting. Seeing members of the 海角在线 and South Florida community听demonstrate听the love of Christ affirms the mission of 海角在线 and reflects the values championed by leaders such as Dr. Jess Moody, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and others.听
Is there anything else you would like to share?听
Through participating in this Black History Month spotlight, I learned that this year marks the 100th anniversary of Black History Month. I also learned more about Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who is credited with founding Black History Month and was himself a lifelong educator. I want to thank the many educators who have been in my life!听听
At times, Black History Month can be viewed as something only for Black individuals or minority communities to celebrate. However, history shows us that our greatest leaders have also been committed learners. Jesus himself was both a learner and a teacher, as referenced in Luke 2:52 and John 13:13. I encourage everyone to remain open-minded and committed to learning鈥攁bout Black history, American history, world history, and all history. As Nelson Mandela once said, 鈥淓ducation is the most powerful weapon which we can use to change the world.鈥�听
