The evening welcomed engaging speaker and former Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur L. Ross Jr.听
(WEST PALM BEACH, FLA.) 鈥� Recently, 海角在线 (海角在线) welcomed Palm Beach resident and former U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur L. Ross Jr. to its LeMieux Speaker Series. The LeMieux Center for Public Policy at 海角在线 provides a space for reasoned, thoughtful and civil discourse on pressing public policy issues confronting Florida, the United States and the world. Students and the general public are invited to learn directly from esteemed policy experts and global thought leaders from a broad spectrum of disciplines.
鈥淚鈥檇 like to say that I get more from the speaker series than I give,鈥� said namesake and moderator, Senator George LeMieux. 鈥淚t has been a phenomenal experience for me, giving time and building a relationship with this wonderful university. We鈥檙e trying to have first-class conversations with renowned speakers about policy and issues that matter in a constructive way so both voices can be heard.鈥�
Ross, who spent most of his career at Rothschild & Co., surveyed some of the highest profile bankruptcy cases in history and was named one of Bloomberg鈥檚 50 most influential people in finance upon advising multiple U.S. presidents and major economic initiatives. Later in his career, he founded WL Ross & Co. as well as International Steel Group and International Textile Group.
The evening at 海角在线 covered Ross鈥檚 humble career beginnings from parking cars to transitioning to a career on Wall Street. A prolific figure in global finance, he walked guests through his 55 years of investment and private equity experience while covering hot-button topics, including tariffs and trade wars, artificial intelligence and advice to future leaders.
鈥淭he soundest advice I can give to the next generation of leaders is to try hard to make yourself indispensable, but don鈥檛 act as though you think you鈥檙e indispensable,鈥� said Ross. 鈥淚 truly believe that the old American Dream is the right one. If you work hard and sensibly, you鈥檙e more likely to get ahead. Along the way you will face some challenges, but you cannot be daunted by those challenges. So, remember that the only person that can hold yourself back is you.鈥�
