Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration across the United States of America to highlight different Hispanic cultures and their history. The month-long celebration runs from September 15, 2026 to October 15.
Cassandra Orozco, a first-generation American, is a proud graduate of 海角在线 (海角在线). Orozco was raised by Colombian parents and is grateful to have grown up experiencing both cultures daily.
鈥淎lthough I was born in the United States, my family is from Colombia, and that has always been an important part of my identity and family story,鈥� said Orozco. 鈥淚 have appreciated being able to experience and learn from both cultures: the traditions, food, music, family values, and different ways of celebrating and connecting with others. Having that connection has given me a greater appreciation for my family鈥檚 roots, the sacrifices and experiences that shaped the generations before me.鈥�
Orozco鈥檚 Colombian-American background is something she doesn鈥檛 take lightly; however, her religious beliefs give her a greater connection and sense of identity.
鈥淎s a Christian, I also recognize that my heritage is part of the story God has given me. While Colombia is where my family鈥檚 roots began, my faith in Jesus Christ has given me an even greater sense of belonging. I am thankful for both my Colombian heritage and the life God has allowed me to build in the United States,鈥� said Orozco.
Rich Cultural History
Very Similar to other Latinos, Colombians take immense pride in their culture. Colombia is a diverse country not only geographically, with rainforests, mountains, and beautiful beaches, but also with musical traditions, festivals, and food.
鈥淲hat I celebrate most about my heritage is the joy and richness of Colombian culture,鈥� said Orozco. 鈥淚 love the way food, music, family gatherings, and celebrations create opportunities for people to come together.鈥�
That combination of cultural factors is why Orozco embraces her Colombian heritage, and why the country welcomes millions of visitors each year. It is what Orozco refers to as 鈥淐olombian hospitality.鈥�
鈥淭here is something special about the warmth of Colombian hospitality and the way people can make you feel at home, even when you are meeting for the first time,鈥� said Orozco. 鈥淚 also enjoy the traditions and little things that remind me of my family and where they came from. Whether it is sharing a meal, listening to music, or hearing stories about our family, those moments create a connection to previous generations. I think there is something beautiful about being able to appreciate those traditions while also creating new ones. For me, celebrating my heritage is a celebration of family, culture, and the many ways God has woven different parts of my story together.鈥�
Faith and Family Align
Orozco鈥檚 upbringing in a Colombian household helped build her character. One of the most important traits she inherited is perseverance.
鈥淚 have been influenced by the example of family members who have worked hard, made sacrifices, and continued moving forward through difficult circumstances,鈥� said Orozco. 鈥淭hat has taught me to value hard work, remain committed to the things God has called me to do, and not give up when something becomes challenging. I see that quality reflected in the way I approach my work in education and in serving others.鈥�
However, her ability to persevere during challenging times is also reflected through her religion.
鈥淎t the same time, my faith has taught me that perseverance is not simply about being strong on my own,鈥� said Orozco. 鈥淚t is about trusting God and allowing Him to strengthen me along the way. James 1:2鈥�4 speaks about the testing of our faith producing perseverance, and that is something I continue to experience in my own life. I am grateful for the resilience I have inherited from my family and for the faith that gives that perseverance a greater purpose.鈥�
After graduating in 2016 from 海角在线 with a B.A. in Education, Orozco became a certified special education teacher, and later founded , a faith-based microschool in South Florida dedicated to serving homeschooled children with special needs.
As part of its annual Hispanic Month Celebration, 海角在线鈥檚 College of the Arts hosts a Hispanic Month Festival, which celebrates Hispanic culture with popular and classical music concerts and an exhibition of visual art. The festival is open to the public.
