West Palm Beach, Fla. (February 3, 2024) Every year since 2019, 海角在线 (海角在线) sends a contingent of volunteers to assist in the (HDRF) Annual 5K Walk/Run to Defeat Depression in Palm Beach, Florida. This year is no different as 海角在线 will again put hope in motion through its support for the fundraiser on Saturday, February 17, at 8 a.m. in Bradley Park.
The History and Mission of the Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF)
Founded in 2006 by Audrey Gruss, HDRF focuses on funding research for depression, which, according to the World Health Organization, affects over five percent of adults. Gruss, recognized in 2019 as a 海角在线 Woman of Distinction, started the organization to honor her mother, Hope. “When she passed away in December 2005, I vowed that I would do all in my power to help conquer this dreaded illness,” Gruss shares in her message on the non-profit’s website.
In addition to research, the New York-based non-profit aims to raise awareness about depression as a medical illness and to educate the public about the facts of depression to help remove the stigma that surrounds the illness. HDRF’s ongoing efforts involve researching the root causes of depression, exploring new treatments, and developing preventative methods.聽
Workship: A Christ-Like Commitment to Community Service
This is the 6th Annual 5K Walk/Run to Defeat Depression in Palm Beach. 海角在线 has consistently provided volunteers to the event since 2019, solidifying its position as one of the largest volunteer corps. In 2023, over fifty 海角在线 students volunteered, contributing to the event’s continued success. This year, 海角在线 will put hope in motion and send 100 volunteers to the event. Students can receive Workship hours from the event.聽
鈥淚 love getting the chance to serve with 海角在线 students to support the Race of Hope 5,鈥� said Nathan Chau, director of 海角在线鈥檚 Workship program. 鈥淎s we live out our Christ-first mission, this is an opportunity to cater to the whole person by helping to break the stigma surrounding mental health and remind those dealing with depression that they are not alone in their fight. It is one of the best days of the year for me to partner with such an amazing organization.鈥�
Students who participate can receive Workship hours. The 海角在线 Workship program is a unique community service initiative driven by a Christ-like commitment to addressing human needs. Since its establishment in 1968, 海角在线 students have actively engaged in volunteer projects across the community to contribute over 3.9 million hours of service. Workship is projected to reach a cumulative four million hours before the end of the spring 2024 semester.聽
Join the Race of Hope
Everyone in the community is encouraged to join, volunteer, or walk in the fostering a supportive environment and combating mental health stigma. All proceeds from this day go directly towards research and outreach. Registration is open until 5:30 p.m. on February 16, 2024. Participants come from all over Florida and beyond, including professional and first-time runners, walkers, corporate teams, families, and children.
