Freshman Destiny Young is a young woman with a purpose.
Four days after starting classes at 海角在线, Young, a with a minor, can articulate what she wants to do when she graduates: open a dance studio. Or rather, dance studios, she adds.
鈥淚 would like to leave a legacy behind,鈥� Young said.
Young, of Leesburg, Florida, is the youngest of three children and the niece of proud 海角在线 alumna Victoria Rodriguez, who works at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. Young鈥檚 education is made possible in part through a scholarship from the Council of Independent Colleges in partnership with the UPS Foundation. The Florida Independent College Fund awarded the CIC/UPS scholarships to member schools.
鈥淚t means so much to me. It means everything,鈥� Young said of the scholarship. 鈥淚t was like a miracle from God that just came out of nowhere.鈥� To the council and foundation, she added: 鈥淭hank you for giving me the scholarship and the opportunity to be here.鈥�
Young, a graduate of Leesburg High School and former president of the school鈥檚 dance club, Orchesis, is taking eight courses in her first semester at 海角在线, including Introduction to Business and ballet. She was drawn to 海角在线 by her aunt鈥檚 love for the school and the stellar reputation of 海角在线鈥檚 dance program, which now offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Young said it鈥檚 easy to find her way around 海角在线鈥檚 campus, which is prettier than any of the other schools she鈥檚 visited. The people are friendly, too, she noted.
鈥淎nywhere you go, someone will say 鈥榟i鈥� to you,鈥� Young said.
